Voyage Along the St. Lawrence: From Québec to the Canadian Maritimes - with Smithsonian Journeys

In alliance with Smithsonian Journeys.

This cruise is part of a collection of PONANT voyages that are specially-tailored for English-speaking travelers who want to engage with the world. In addition to the usual elements of the PONANT experience, the listed price for these voyages includes transfers to and from the ship, talks and discussions aboard ship by world class experts, and a shore excursion or activity in each port of call that encourages guests to embrace the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of the local environment and culture.

The waterways of eastern Canada and northern New England are among the loveliest in the world. The rock-bound coast, soaring cliffs, and idyllic waterfront villages have drawn visitors for more than one hundred years.

After embarking in Toronto, Ontario, your first full day aboard ship is spent navigating the St. Lawrence Seaway, a network of lakes, canals, and locks that provides deep-water passage from Lake Ontario to the St. Lawrence River.

Montréal, the first of four calls in Québec, is a cosmopolitan metropolis, where you may tour the charming Old Town or explore the arts scene along St. Laurent Boulevard. Québec City, with its narrow cobblestoned lanes and historic battlements, is one of North America's most romantic spots.

Tadoussac, the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in Canada, sits at the mouth of the Saguenay River, an area famous for the whales that congregate there to feed. And the picturesque village of Percé, at the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula, serves as gateway to the UNESCO Global Geopark of Bonaventure Island.

Cap-aux-Meules, in the Magdalen Islands, is a fascinating Acadian stronghold, where the legacy of the 17th-century colonists who settled here and defended their autonomy against both British and French lives on.

Nova Scotia is next, offering the historical town of Lunenburg for discovery. Charming Lunenburg, whose Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, is also home to the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic.

A day at sea brings you to Eastport, Maine, where you will enjoy an opportunity to visit the Tides Institute & Museum of Art or Shackford Head State Park on Moose Island, or to join your local boat captain on a whale watching excursion, collecting lobster traps on the way back to port. Disembark the following day in Boston, Massachusetts.

From the Northern Lights to the Polar Night

With featured guest Ian Dawson, British Photo Ambassador.

The writer Jørn Riel described the polar night as a "a world apart, [...] unique and fascinating, where nature reigns supreme and men keep a low profile." When the northern winter approaches, the sun hardly rises over the horizon any more: experience an all-new PONANT journey and let yourself be guided towards a new temporality, the moment when a long dusk stretches out after the day. From the jagged coastlines of Norway to the ice-covered reliefs of Spitsbergen, dive into the heart of landscapes lit by powdered hues and set off in search of the exhilarating spectacle of the Northern Lights.

Aboard LeCommandant Charcot, a warm cocoon, savour the discreet and refined comfort of its spaces opening out onto the world. From the Blue Lagoon pool, the Observatory Lounge or the uninterruptedoutsidepromenadedeck, you will appreciate the splendour of the winter panoramas over the Arctic Circle.

You will set sail towards the shores of continental Norway at the edge of the Arctic Ocean: welcome to Lapland! Very close to the emblematic North Cape, the northernmost point of Europe, sovereign nature delivers geological marvels in the heart of a fjord - a preserved island, dolomites and rocky rises formed during the last glaciation. The Sami, reindeer farmers and one of the last European indigenous people, live between rugged shores and snow-capped peaks, remarkable coastal cities and large wild expanses, in the Lapland territory. During warm encounters, you will discover their cultural traditions and their way of life, in harmony with the elements. Immerse yourself in nature and, while the night overtakes the day, set off to chase the Northern Lights.

On this exclusivePONANT itinerary, your ship will continue on its path north, towards the coastlines of Spitsbergen. From this territory at the end of the world, you will explore majesticfjords and admire ancientglaciers and alpine peaks, at dusk. Here, the sun takes its leave, giving way to the long polar night, steeped in mystery and source of many Nordic myths.

Make the most of the rarity of daylight, experience close up the fleeting dusk and delight in the majestic landscapes before the long winter night.

The itinerary is subject to modifications. On board, the sailing programme, outings and activities cannot be guaranteed and are subject to weather conditions.

You will first enjoy a magnificent sail along the shimmering waters of Lake Ontario, then your ship will sail into the Saint Lawrence river, a prodigious waterway home to exceptionally beautiful nature.

You will then call in at two emblematic cities: Montreal, famous for its liveliness and its cultural vibrancy and Québec, capital of Canada's Beautiful Province, located on the St. Lawrence estuary and founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. Do not miss discovering this charming and lively city where the historic neighbourhood of Old Québec, with its ramparts and fortifications, is listed as World Heritage by UNESCO.

Polynesia and Easter Island

Some trips are life changing, altering our perception of the world forever. In the waters of the Pacific Ocean, sail on an incredible odyssey taking you from the shores of Tahiti to the legendary Easter Island. Over 15 days aboard Le Boréal, (re)discover the shared mysteries of these faraway places and the captivating beauty of their extraordinary landscapes.

Leave Papeete and the island of Tahiti in your wake to reach the coast of the stunning Bora Bora. This island, whose name translates to 'first-born' in English, is also called Mai te pora ('created by the gods') by the Polynesians, since only divine will could have created an Eden such as this. Admire its turquoise lagoon, a garden for the coral life and multicoloured fish, overlooked by cliffs covered in lush vegetation, and take in the gentleness of Polynesia. A little further on, Moorea awaits you and invites you to discover Polynesian culture, notably by visiting one of the island's pearl farms that are among the treasures of the island nation Now it is time for Le Boréal to leave behind the Society Islands to take you to the Tuamotu Archipelago and the Anaa atoll. It is said that ship captains can recognise it from a great distance as the pale green of its lagoon is sometimes reflected in the clouds!

Far from the major maritime routes, you now find yourself in the Gambier archipelago, one of the most unspoiled destinations in Polynesia. Appearing on the horizon is the small village of Rikitea where St Michael's Cathedral stands proudly, entirely built from coral and timber.

Crystal-clear waters, abundant vegetation, endemic wildlife... You will sail to the Pitcairn Islands, a subtropical ecosystem whose capital, Adamstown*, is like a charming small village.

Finally, you will reach the intriguing and fabulous Easter Island, lying approximately 3,700 km (2,300 miles) away from the continent. This legendary land will reveal its mysteries to you through its undeciphered 'rongorongo' inscriptions carved into wooden tablets, but also and above all through its famous moais or 'walking statues' facing the endless expanse of ocean and now classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.

*Disembarkation on the Pitcairn Islands is subject to weather conditions.

Polar Lights: From North Cape to the Lofoten Islands

With featured guest Ian Dawson, British Photo Ambassador.

Winter is silently approaching and the day is slowly withdrawing near the Arctic Circle, making way for a long dusk pre-empting the darkness. Take the time to discover the Norwegian fjords and the sumptuous Lofoten archipelago, in the morning light or at dusk. The moment is perfect for a sensitive experience, if ever there were one, and for exploring this seasonal temporality like somewhere completely new.

The warm refuge of Le Commandant Charcot will open the doors for you to an all-new journey on the cusp of winter and invites you to explore the magnificent panoramas from the uninterrupted outside promenade deck, the Blue Lagoon pool or the Observatory Lounge. Appreciate the discreet and refined comfort of its spaces opening out onto the exterior and enjoy moments in complete communion with the elements.

Experience first-hand the North Cape, the summit of Europe, and explore the rugged shores of the edges of the Arctic and the natural sanctuaries of Norway: dolomite cliffs shaped by the last glaciation, an archaeological site dating from the Bronze Age, majestic fjords, remarkable coastal cities, fishing villages and coniferous forests. During this journey above the Arctic Circle, you will discover Lapland, home to the Sami, who are reindeer farmers and one of the last European indigenous people. During warm encounters, you will discover their cultural traditions and their way of life, in harmony with the elements. Immerse yourself in nature and, as the night overtakes the day, set off to chase the Northern Lights.

Amidst these distant landscapes, the Lofoten archipelago reveals itself, and is quite captivating. Can we conceive of a spectacle that is more fascinating than the undulating and coloured veil of the Northern Lights observed in the heart of these marvellous islands? The Swedish Impressionist artist, Anna Boberg (1864-1935) understood. She discovered the Lofoten Islands in 1901 and continued to return there over 33 years, finding the archipelago to be a great place from which to observe the Northern Lights. Her paintings give them a poetic, lyrical and almost mystic vision, celebrating the beauty of the setting.

Be like this passionate painter and allow the beauty of the journey soak in as the sky enshrouds the landscapes with surreal light.

The itinerary is subject to modifications. On board, the sailing programme, outings and activities cannot be guaranteed and are subject to weather conditions.
