Historic Cities of the Baltic Sea

PONANT invites you to discover the historical cities along the Baltic Sea. You will embark on Le Champlain for an 10-day cruise about the cultural wonders of the Hanseatic League.

From Copenhagen, you will first set a course for Karlskrona. This city, whose history is intrinsically linked to the Swedish Navy, boasts exceptional UNESCO-listed architecture that is characteristic of late-17th-century European naval cities. 

Your ship will then call at Gdansk, famous for its amber stone and its shipyards. The former Hanseatic city will reveal some of its architectural treasures, in Gothic and Baroque styles, restored or rebuilt.

You will also discover Riga, capital of Latvia. A unique blend of different architectural styles, the old town will open itself up to you like the pages of a history book.

On Saaremaa, dive into the complex history of this island, Estonia's largest. First invaded by the Vikings, it became Danish then Swedish before being taken by the Russian Empire and later occupied by the Germans. In 1991, it finally became Estonian when the country gained its independence.

You will then head to Helsinki. Located on a peninsula surrounded by almost 300 islands, the verdant capital of Finland will charm you with its Art Nouveau architecture.

You will visit Tallinn, emblematic city of the Hanseatic League, the large trading network that dominated the Baltic Sea for several centuries. Listed as UNESCO Heritage Site, this once opulent city still have remarkably well-preserved public buildings, merchant houses and warehouses.

Your ship will finally head for Stockholm, your disembarkation port.

The Canaries, lands of contrast

In the Canaries archipelago, the volcanic islands rise from the Atlantic Ocean like mirages. In these lands of a thousand contrasts, lunar landscapes with crimson and ashen reflections, valleys covered in lush vegetation, craggy coves and sand dunes blend beautifully.  At the heart of these majestic islands, where nature reigns supreme, PONANT invites you to enjoy a surprising interlude on this 8-day cruise aboard Le Boréal.

Your cruise will start on the island of Gran Canaria in Las Palmas, then Le Boréal will take to the sea, sailing to Lanzarote, or the Island of Fire. This inspiring, enigmatic and mysterious island reveals itself in a captivating setting composed of majestic peaks, volcanic vineyards and pristine national parks. It is also renowned for its many volcanic tunnels and caves offering unique moments in a fascinating underground world.  

The neighbouring island of Fuerteventura lies a little further south. In Puerto del Rosario, admire the old town and its Canarian-style houses, take in the exceptional panoramas formed by its emblematic sand dunes and go hiking to discover the biodiversity of the island.

Your ship will sail westward to reach the vibrant seaside town of Los Cristianos. Succumb to the charms of its atmosphere unlike any other, its mythical Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain, and its long stretches of fine sand lapped by the turquoise waters of the Atlantic.

Next, Santa Cruz de La Palma will invite you to spend a moment suspended in time. Here, the accent is on authenticity and tranquillity as you succumb to the charms of its unspoilt nature and its unusual architectural heritage featuring traditional Canarian houses with brightly-coloured wooden balconies, sumptuous palaces, and religious buildings.

You will journey onward to El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands. Among other activities, in this peaceful and tranquil haven scattered with volcanic desert and forests of pine and laurel, you will be able to enjoy these vast, untouched, lush spaces during a discovery tour of the island on an electric bike.

Le Boréal will then drop anchor at?La Gomera. This tiny island with lush vegetation is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its biosphere reserve. This island is also renowned for its whistling language,?Silbo, that the inhabitants use to communicate from one valley to another. 

Finally, you will visit Las Palmas, on Gran Canaria Island, the final port of call on your Canarian cruise.

Disko Bay: Meeting the Inuit & Discovering the Unknown

It is spring in Greenland. The snow is everywhere and covers a landscape whose apparent monotony reveals unexpected reliefs. For the very first time for a ship, Le Commandant Charcot will humbly progress towards Baffin Bay and ice-covered villages, inaccessible to traditional ships during this early period. During a 16-day journey of exploration, you will sail to the magnificent icy Disko Bay, home to the largest icebergs in the northern hemisphere. From unforgettable experiences to warm encounters, in the cosy atmosphere of an exceptional ship, take the time to enjoy moments of intense emotion and unsuspected discoveries.  

Shaped for polar exploration, Le Commandant Charcot will make its way amongst fragments of drifting and broken-up ice floe, before approaching Inuit villages encircled by ice. During this spring season, following the long winter night, sailing the western Greenlandic coast holds the promise of moments of wonder, of fantastic surprises, provided by the uncertainty, which, always, gives the orders here. As we are taught by Inuit wisdom, only the present moment matters. As you progress towards Baffin Bay, the ice will unveil its countless nuances and give you a new vision of this place at the end of the world. In Disko Bay, the show becomes dreamlike, the icebergs that floated during the summer are now stuck in the frozen sea and make up cathedrals of ice that will leave you speechless.  

During this immersion in the Greenlandic spring, you will discover the local communities of the west whose villages are still encircled by the bordering ice floe. The harshness of winter gradually makes way for the spring and the activities that go with it. Thanks to its special connection with the inhabitants of this fascinating island, PONANT offers you an unforgettable experience. For two days, in Ilulissat and Qeqertarsuaq, you will enjoy a total immersion. Following the pace of the Inuit community, you will experience moments of sharing based around their spring traditions. Polar hikes, ice fishing and dog sledding will punctuate your days but the real treasure lies elsewhere. The Inuits' way of life and philosophy will imbue you with age-old wisdom.

Japan, natural archipelago and secular heritage

With this itinerary, PONANT is inviting you aboard Le Jacques-Cartier for a unique expedition cruise between Kagoshima and Osaka. A magical 9-day trip to discover some of the natural gems and ancestral heritage of western Kyushu, as well as picturesque villages in the Seto Inland Sea, the theatre of many battles and historic events that have shaped its myth and grandeur over time and with the ebb and flow of the tides.  

After setting sail from Kagoshima, a bustling city nestling between ancient forests and majestic volcanoes, Le Jacques-Cartier will travel westward to reach the fascinating Koshikijima Islands. Aboard one of our Zodiacs, you will be fascinated by the raw and authentic beauty of the monumental cliffs and huge rock formations dating back to the Cretaceous periodnearly 80 million years ago.  

Between the Yatsushiro and Ariake seas, off the coast of Nagasaki, succumb to the charms of the island region of Amakusa, once the refuge of Christians fleeing the ban on Catholicism in the 17th century during the Edo period. Christian heritage can also be found further north, in the Goto Islands, on Kamigoto Island. Here, each small town bears traces of this influence that is still very much present, as evidenced by the many religious buildings dotting Kamigoto.

Then you will sail to South Korea, a small peninsula that juts out into the Sea of Japan, and discover Busan, South Korea's second city. This richly contrasting city will unveil its port and the old district of Chalgachi. 

Back in Japan, you will set out to discover Moji, on the northern tip of the island of Kyushu. In the past a strategic site for maritime trade with China, this stunning city of picturesque little streets will enthral you with its preserved architectural heritage evoking the traditional Japan of the Meiji era and the end of the 19th century. From the top of the Mojiko Retro Observation Room, you will be able to enjoy an exceptional panorama, a poetic combination of shinto sanctuaries and captivating maritime landscapes.

After a trip aboard one of our Zodiac dinghies, in the pretty fishing villages of Shimokamagari and Mitarai, you will arrive in Tomonoura, known for its gentle way of life and its craggy landscapes that inspired the director Hayao Miyazaki for the landscapes of Ponyo.

Finally, for a grand finale, your journey will end in Osaka, your disembarkation port.

Secrets of the Iberian Peninsula

Setting sail from Lisbon, the seven-hilled Portuguese capital, you will head south to the beautiful Algarve region and call in Lagos. Its rich maritime heritage and spectacular coastline make this pretty coastal town with its hidden charm so fascinating.   

You will then sail along the Strait of Gibraltar and immerse yourself in the multicultural charm of Tangier. L'Austral will then chart a course towards Cartagena where you can discover a rich ancient heritage dating back to the Carthaginians and the Romans.

After a call at Valencia, with its remarkable architectural splendours, you will visit Palma de Mallorca, one of the jewels of the Balearic Archipelago, known for its four main islands that are charming, picturesque and discreet, sitting atop the clear waters of the Mediterranean like grains of sand.

Your final port of call will have you discovering the seaside town of Roses, on the Costa Brava, before sailing on to Barcelona, your disembarkation port.

As the cradle of ancient Greek, Roman and Phoenician civilisations, a link between peoples and a cultural crossroads, the Mediterranean embodies the fascinating encounter between East and West, where cultures have blended and intermingled for millennia. From Athens, Le Bougainville sails to the southern part of the Aegean Sea and the splendid ancient island of Crete. In its capital, Heraklion, built on the side of a hill overlooking the harbour, you can enjoy looking at the former Venetian ramparts, providing a unique view of the city. Then you will be enchanted by Chania, an ancient city lying between mountains, endless olive groves, secret coves and marvellous beaches.

Further west, you reach Valletta, capital of the island of Malta. Stronghold of the Knights of the Order of Malta, the town is overflowing with architectural splendours and artistic treasures that you will glimpse as soon as you arrive at the port, which is one of the most beautiful in Europe.

Then you head for Sicily and your next stop is Porto Empedocle, gateway to the fabled Greek temples of Agrigento, among the most captivating ruins in the entire Mediterranean. Then, on Etna's slopes, you spend a magical moment in Catania, destroyed seven times by the volcano's eruptions. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city will charm you with its incomparable cultural wealth.

Lastly, Le Bougainville sails by Reggio di Calabria before heading for the Tyrrhenian coast. After a timeless moment in Salerno, you sail further north to Gaeta. Clinging to the cliffs facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, the ancient city with its narrow streets redolent of a fascinating past will captivate you with its many architectural treasures, like the cathedral, an elegant Romanesque and Moorish building with ceramic decoration.

You continue to sail along the Italian coast to Civitavecchia, the final stop on your trip to these lands brimming with history.

Your exploration will continue in the Algarve region at the country's southern tip. Bewitching Lagos stands proud like a fortress in hues of ochre and orange, bordered by the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. In this town of nature and culture, stroll in the paved small streets of the historic centre whose Moorish and Portuguese influences create a delightful blend.

Further north, you will head towards the surprising and picturesque mediaeval city of Setúbal. Surrounded by vast parks and nature reserves featuring abundant biodiversity, between the Sado Estuary and the Serra da Arrábda whose waters shelter many dolphins, you will also fall under the charm of the historic heritage of this authentic fishing town.

Your cruise will come to an end in Lisbon, sitting on the Tagus River, distilling its one-of-a-kind charm imbued with rich history.

Your cruise begins with trips from Nafplio to two of Greece's major sites: the ruins of Mycenae and the theatre at Epidaurus. Then Le Lapérouse sets sail for Syracuse, a truly impressive ancient city, whose historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ship then heads for Valletta, the capital of Malta, which is entirely listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to a number of historic sites: St John's Cathedral, the Grand Master's Palace and the churches of Our Lady of Victory, St Catherine and the Jesuits. From here, you head for Porto Empedocle, gateway to the legendary Greek temples of Agrigento: some of the most fascinating ruins in the Mediterranean.

Le Lapérouse resumes its journey to head for the Tunisian shores and capital, Tunis. Rome's great rival, Ancient Carthage, is yours to discover as you visit its ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Your journey then continues along the coast of nearby Algeria to Annaba, where you visit the archaeological site of Hippo, one of Roman Africa's main cities.

After a stopover in Palma de Mallorca, the jewel of the Balearic archipelago with its famous cathedral, you head for Tarragona, an ancient Roman city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your cruise ends in Valencia, a city with a remarkable architectural heritage.

Le Champlain will sail to the Swedish island of Gotland and call at Visby, a site that was important for the Hanseatic League in the Baltic Sea around the 13th century. A UNESCO Heritage Site, this once-opulent city still has remarkably well-preserved ramparts, public buildings, merchant houses and warehouses.

Then your ship will chart a course towards the charming town of Gudhjem, on the small Danish island of Bornholm, which is greatly appreciated by the Danish for its variety of landscapes ranging from granite to great sandy beaches.

The next step of your voyage will take you to Gothenburg, in Sweden. The country's main port and labelled City of Literature by UNESCO, it can be discovered via its pretty canals, cultural treasures and emblematic districts.

Le Champlain will then set a course for Norway, its stunning scenery and its incredible cities and towns. Sitting on the edge of a fjord covered in greenery, Oslo, the creative, multicultural, radiant capital of Norway reflects a deep attachment to its Viking and Scandinavian roots. You will then sail along the coast to Arendal, called the Venice of the North due to its canals. On the southern coast, the colourful facades of Egersund stretch out along the curve of a fjord and the town's industrial past, centred on fishing and earthenware production, is revealed.

Le Champlain will sail towards Kirkwall, capital of the Orkney Islands, where numerous seabirds, such as gannets and European shags, have taken up residence.

The last stage of your cruise will take you to Aberdeen. Its magnificent coast, boasting a remarkable nature reserve and majestic castles nearby, make Scotland's third largest city, full of Gothic charm, an exceptional port of call.

Finally, you will reach Edinburgh, city of history and labelled city of literature by UNESCO, your port of disembarkation.

Odyssey in the heart of Japan's subtropical islands

PONANT is the first cruise company to take you to the heart of the sublime landscapes of the tropical islands in southern Japan during an expedition cruise. On this 12-day itinerary aboard Le Jacques-Cartier, from the island of Osaka to Ishigaki, you will discover the rich natural heritage, traditional villages and craft of the Okinawa, Yaeyama and Sakishima Islands, in the Ryukyu archipelago.

Leaving from Osaka, you will head towards the island of Amami Oshima, between Kyushu and Okinawa. You will fall in love with this island surrounded by stunning coral reefs, punctuated with verdant peaks, covered in primary forest and monumental mangroves, and boasting strong Okinawan influences.

After calling in at Iheyajima, the most northern island from Okinawa, LeJacques Cartier will set sail south. In the Kerema archipelago, in Zamami, you will enjoy the unspoiled beauty of this pristine island, known the world over for the distinctive blue of the surrounding sea, called "Kerama blue". The sea life in the area is also exceptionally rich and sea turtles can often be spotted swimming among the coral. Facing it, fellow island Kumejima invites you to spend a timeless moment. Famous for its 'Eisa', a form of folk dance performed to the rhythm of traditional drums, this multifaceted island will reveal itself through its natural treasures: the mythical Mifuga rock formation or the idyllic beach of Hatenohama, a point of reference for fans of the underwater world. 

Following a port of call in the picturesque village of Taketomijima, with its traditional Okinawan dwellings and its idyllic sandy expanses, Le Jacques-Cartier will sail south to the island of Iriomotejima. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this little corner of paradise will enchant you with its authentic and preserved character, with its wild beaches lying alongside traditional villages surrounded by luxurious tropical forest: jungle, mangrove, rivers, waterfalls. This unique biodiversity is made up of many endemic species.  

The landscapes on the remote island of Yonagunijima, the easternmost of the Ryukyu Islands, offer a striking contrast: cliffs, windswept meadows, wild horses. The beauty of its sea-beds and their mysterious rocky formations will delight the most experienced divers.

After a final port of call in at Keelung to discover Taipei and the lush island of Taiwan, you will finish this unique journey in Ishigaki, your disembarkation port and the largest island in the Yaeyama archipelago.
